Name: Andrea Age: 40 Provenience: Milan (Italy) I've been playing the bass guitar for 22 years, but I define myself as an "atipical bass player" because, since the beginning, I never took into account the idea of playing just to "take the time" and do the rythmic base of the songs, or at least....not only. My way of playing is a bit particular, let's just say unusual, at least in Italy. I try to pick up from my basses their true soul (and mine too) through every possible form and colour. I play in a different way...that might also not be appreciated! But that's the way I am, and I can't and I won't change! When I studied, many years ago, I felt tired by the old rules of the walking bass, by the modal stereotypes, by the plan and static bass lines of the useless bass players we frequently see or listen to... Quite early, after 3 years of study, I begun to play in a few bands, playing different genres, trying to test and experience different situations growing up my skills and expertise, creating my personal and unique way of playing. Official bands: PINDARIC FLIGHT was a project based on rock/prog-metal music, but also on the psychedelic music of the '70. We never set any limit to o...

As I said I'm a bass player that doesn't care about the standard rules and especially that doesn't want to play backside the others! Among my favourite bassists there are Billy Sheehan, even if I don't love the music he played in the early '90, he's absolutely a giant! He's able to give a tremendous energy and groove to those fucking 4 strings! Then I'd say Trey Gunn (innovative and mastodontic!), Tom Kennedy, Rufus Philpot, John Myung and Stu Hamm. I go on reminding the mighty Tony Levin, he has really changed the history of the bass, as a few years before did Jaco. Then there are bassists that play in a really incredible way! They're Sean Malone (Gordian Knot), Michael Manring, Jay Terrien and Bill Burke. These guys play in a really absurd way, using loops, tapping, overdubbing etc. very frequently playing song only with the bass, and without other instruments! I really like their way of playing music and one of the next future projects I'm working on is to do something like them!

The first illumination came out when I arrived at a point where I absolutely needed an instrument that mirrored myself at 100%, because frequently 6 strings were not sufficient to express what I wanted to, especially if positioned in the standard order, from B to C. So I customed my 6 strings Cort "Artisan" into an hybrid bass guitar re-named "mirror mode", positioning the strings like a sort of Stick or Warr guitar. I replaced the the original B and E with respectively a C and a G (0.27 e 0.35!), steels strings, thinner that the others on the opposite side of the neck. In this way I reached the possibility to experiment strange, new positions, bichords, chords and arpeggios, including the possibility to play my bass horizontally! Just like a piano!! Having two double strings, but with different scale (and "steel" as the others are nickel coated) gave me the opportunity to play the same note giving two different moods, attack and tone! The most interesting thing is that I can play odd measures (5 or 7/4) with the right hand as I'm playing a 4/4 with my left hand! In this way I could experiment new positions, many almost "pianistic", and as I said chords and arpeggios that have grow...

The second illumination came out a few times after having customised my 6 strings Cort "Artisan". I realised that I wanted more, so I begun to search on the internet some particular bass from which take the idea to create my own bass. The idea was to have the "definitive bass" so I decided to ask someone to build a 7 strings customised bass. On the web I found many interesting things, some absurds, other too expensive. I collected may materials, photos, descriptions, specifications etc. and I asked some instrument maker in Milan wether they were available and able to build what I wanted. The only one that said yes was Jacaranda. We discussed about the bridge, the neck and other many specifications....In the end we reached the final solution customising a 6 strings JDF, the best model produced by Jacaranda, substituting the standard bridge with an ABM 7 strings bridge and strings blocker at the top of the neck. Unfortunately the piezo were not available on this bridge but, with an active electronic and EMG pick-ups, the bass has an incedible tone, that can go from the bass ones right to the "guitar-like" medium/high frequencies and attack! Thanks to this bass now I feel free to play...
