The Dry Climate of the Region
The Mountains and Basins region experiences one of the most arid climates in all of Texas. Low rainfall, intense sunshine, and extreme temperature swings define daily and seasonal life here.
• Annual rainfall averages less than 12 inches in most of the region
• Summer temperatures frequently exceed 100°F on the desert floor
• Winters can bring freezing temperatures and occasional snow at higher elevations
• Low humidity and strong winds accelerate evaporation and drought conditions
• The rain shadow effect of mountain ranges intensifies dryness in the basins below
