Where to Stay and How to Get Around

Choosing the right base and transport mode makes all the difference in Kyoto.

• Stay in Higashiyama or Gion for walkable access to Day 1 attractions

• Traditional machiya guesthouses and ryokan offer the most authentic experience

• IC Card (Suica or Icoca) covers all buses, subways, and JR trains — top up at station kiosks

• Rent bicycles for flat central Kyoto: half a day covers the Imperial Palace, Nijo Castle, and Nishiki

• Taxis are affordable and plentiful — useful for late-night Pontocho departures

• The Arashiyama Bamboo Line bus runs direct from Kyoto Station

Tip: Book ryokan rooms well in advance — especially for 3 or more people. Many properties have limited rooms and fill months ahead during peak season.
